Fantasy games are full of medieval and pseudo-medieval imagery from the clash of chivalrous knights on horseback to the wily thieves making their way through cobbled streets, risking their necks to thieve a coin or two or a loaf of bread. The fantasy world is one of fields, villages, Robin Hood, King Arthur, Dragons and renaissance fair costume and pomp.

Quite where ninjas fit into that I am not sure.

When I think of Monks and of your usual fantasy fare I do not think of the 36 chambers of Shaolin, I think of Friar Tuck, I think of the chanting Monks from Monty Python & The Holy Grail. These are the images that come to mind, not a Jackie Chan time travel comedy.
















  • System - ACTUAL Monk is designed for use as a character class within OGL games. You will more than likely find yourself rolling a D20 when you use it.
  • Presentation - Actual monk is presented in two-column format with a medieval border down one side and a faded image for the background. While 'art heavy' for a product of this type it should print well.
  • Keynotes - ACTUAL Monk is a character class product, there are many similar products but hopefully this class brings a sensibility and awareness from both within and without standard OGL system play.
  • Design Notes - The fact that the 'Monk' class has always been a martial artist has irked me since time immemorial. While there's a place for east-meets-west in fantasy or historical fiction it is usually central to the story. Kung-Fu monks in these fantasy games are ubiquitous and anachronistic, helping to break the feel of the genre. I decided to go for something different, more like a specialised and devout, less martial, cleric. ACTUAL Paladin and ACTUAL Assasain will follow.
