- System
- Cloak of Steel uses a modified OGL system much
based on our own OGL Imprint, The Live System. You may well
find you need a twenty-sided dice in order to play. Cloak
of Steel speeds up combat and makes it more deadly, provides
rules for character-based Mecha that grow along with your
character, uses point-based character generation with merits
and flaws and provides a feat and mana based magic system
of versatility and ease.
- Presentation
- Cloak of Steel is more lavishly illustrated than
many of our other games with illustrations of the Cloaks,
Races, Character Classes and sample characters throughout
the text as well as a very nice map of Tierplana: The world
of Cloak of Steel.
- Keynotes
- A classless and levelless OGL implementation. Feat and
Mana based magic. Merits and flaws. Faster, deadlier combat.
Construction rules for mecha within the setting. Rich background
with interlocking and well thought out background and technology.
A world where the decisions of men, not gods, determine
the future.
- Design
Notes - This product marked the transition of Postmortem
Studios from a non-profit community based studio to a for-profit
personal company. Cloak of Steel had contributions to it
from the old Postmortem e-mail list and from several friends
but mostly Steven Mortimer who worked with me on The Munchkin's
Guide to Powergaming. I used the opportunity to address
several things I thought were unwieldy about the OGL and
to create a fantasy world that interested me, where good
and evil weren't absolutes and where gods were absent -
but still worshipped. I was also heavily dosed with Sakura
Wars and Escaflowne while I was working on this book.

Comments
I'm
a sucker for mecha in fantasy settings.. and this book does
an excellent job of making a D20 game of it.
Nice art work, the various kingdoms are well thought out and
interlock in history. Also loved the vehicle design system..
very simple and keeping the flavor of the setting.
